Fishing

Catch the best of our sea

Slovenia's coastline is just over 40 kilometres long, making it one of the shortest in Europe. But there are more than enough opportunities for a good catch, with a whole range of tasty fish to be found here; mackerel, cuttlefish, squid, orcas... Going fishing is not so easy, as you need a licence. Check out all the handy tips on licences, fishing techniques and, of course, suggestions on some of the most popular destinations among Slovenian anglers.

Permits

Slovenian law dictates that before fishing in the Slovenian sea, the appropriate licence must be obtained:

  • Annual licence (sport fishing): required to engage in sport fishing. You can obtain it by becoming a member of one of the fishing associations affiliated to the Slovenian Sea Sport Fishing Association. You can apply for it at the association.
  • Weekly or daily licence (recreational fishing): allows one day or one week of recreational fishing. It is much easier to obtain; all you have to do is order it online. The licence becomes valid about an hour after it is issued and you don't need to print it out - just save the unique code you receive on your phone.
  • No licence is required for recreational fishing from the shore. This allows you to gain valuable experience without unnecessary bureaucracy, which is especially useful for beginners and Sunday anglers.

Fishing techniques

  • Pole-and-line fishing: One of the most commonly used fishing techniques. This method uses a rod, a lead ball, and a sliding sinker. A fluorocarbon leader is tied to the rod, with a hook attached at the end.
  • Float fishing: A technique suitable for catching all species of fish. A float is attached to the fishing line, with two stoppers placed above and below it to restrict movement and keep it in position. The main line is equipped with a swivel on one end and a hook on the other.
  • Wobbler fishing: A specialized technique for catching sea bass and needlefish. It involves a main line connected to a fluorocarbon leader, which is then attached to a spinning rod and a lure. The wobbler is an artificial bait shaped like a small fish and fitted with hooks.
  • Underwater fishing: This technique involves the use of a harpoon and diving equipment. While generally less common, it is still frequently practiced among Slovenian fishermen.
