Blue flag
How to recognize a well-maintained and safe beach?
When choosing a beach, the Blue Flag is one of those signs that can immediately tell us: here we can relax without worry. It is an international quality label awarded to beaches and marinas that meet strict standards regarding sea cleanliness, safety, maintenance, and environmental care. For you as a visitor, this means that the bathing water is regularly tested, the beach is well maintained, basic infrastructure and safety measures are in place, and the destination also takes care of sustainable environmental practices.
The story of the origin of the Blue Flag
The idea of the Blue Flag originates from France in 1985, when schoolchildren took part in an environmental campaign raising awareness about marine pollution. They wrote their messages on small notes, placed them in bottles, and released them into the ocean so they would travel with the sea currents and draw attention to the problem of waste in the sea. This symbolic project became the foundation for today’s Blue Flag program.
What does the Blue Flag on a beach mean?
- excellent bathing water quality
- regular monitoring of cleanliness and safety
- well-maintained infrastructure (toilets, access points, lifeguard service)
- focus on environmental awareness and sustainability
- safe and pleasant environment for swimmers
The Blue Flag is not only a beautiful symbol on the beach, but also practical information: it shows that the beach is well maintained, suitable for swimming, and pleasant for spending a day by the sea. This is especially welcome if you are traveling with children, looking for a well-organized beach, want clean sea water, or simply wish to choose a spot where quality, safety, and environmental care are already ensured.
In Portorož and Piran, the Blue Flag further confirms what visitors value most — the beauty of the Adriatic, well-kept beaches, and a pleasant seaside experience where you can truly enjoy yourself.
