Mobile Šavrinka: Bringing Local Istrian Flavours Closer to Guests

Fresh vegetables, fruit, cheese, cured meats, olive oils, honey and other Istrian specialities can now be even closer to guests staying in our destination. Mobile Šavrinka connects local producers and providers and, through online ordering and a network of pick-up points, brings their products closer to both residents and visitors of Slovenian Istria. The initiative follows a simple idea: to make the journey from producer to plate as short as possible. Local and seasonal food is an important part of the destination experience, allowing visitors not only to explore Istria, but also to taste it.

From the local producer to the guest

The story of Mobile Šavrinka draws inspiration from the tradition of the Šavrinke, women who once carried local produce from the Istrian hinterland to their customers on foot. Today, the project continues this idea in a modern way, connecting local producers with consumers through online ordering and organised collection at various locations across Istria.

The offer includes boxes of fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables as well as a variety of local products. Fruit and vegetables come from local producers in Slovenian Istria, while the wider selection also includes cheese, cured meats, olive oils, spreads, honey and other homemade specialities from Istrian producers. The emphasis is on local origin, quality and short supply chains.

Zero kilometre as part of the tourism experience

For the Portorož & Piran destination, this kind of offer is also important for the development of gastronomic and sustainable tourism. Guests are increasingly looking for products with a clear origin, a story and a genuine connection to the place where they are spending their holiday.

The concept of local food, or “zero kilometre”, is particularly appealing to guests staying in apartments, holiday homes and other accommodation where they can prepare their own meals. Instead of buying generic products, they can choose fresh ingredients from the immediate surroundings and make their own table part of the holiday experience.

This also creates an opportunity for cooperation with private accommodation providers and other hospitality businesses. Upon arrival, they can inform guests about the option of ordering local produce boxes, recommend a pick-up point or present Mobile Šavrinka as one of the ways to discover the local gastronomy.

Easy ordering, collection every Friday

Orders can be placed through the Agraria Šavrinka online shop. Customers choose a box or individual products and select a pick-up point, while Mobile Šavrinka delivers the order to the chosen location. Orders for collection in the same week must be placed no later than Tuesday at 11:59 PM, with collection taking place on Fridays.

Pick-up points in the Portorož & Piran destination include Agraria Lucija and Marina Portorož. The project flyer also presents additional pick-up points and explains the ordering process in four simple steps: order a box, choose a pick-up point, preparation and delivery, and collection.

Local food creates more than just a meal

Initiatives like this have a broader value. By purchasing local products, local producers are supported, more economic value remains within the local community, and shorter supply chains contribute to more sustainable consumption.

Food can also help create a stronger connection between the coast and the Istrian hinterland. A guest who discovers local tomatoes, Istrian olive oil, cheese, honey or other products is also discovering the people, landscape and traditions behind them.

Mobile Šavrinka is therefore more than just a way to buy local food. It is also an opportunity to strengthen connections between producers, tourism providers and guests and to further enhance the authentic gastronomic offer of Slovenian Istria.

The Šavrinke project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Interreg VI-A Slovenia–Croatia 2021–2027 programme.
