Salt is the memory of the sea
Open air galerie, Arkade Bernardin
Every grain of salt carries within it the traces of waves and wind, the breath of the moon and the radiance of the sun. When the sea evaporates, the water rises back to the sky, while the salt remains behind as a memory that refuses to disappear. The sea can never truly stay in the palm of the hand, yet salt leaves its presence everywhere: on the skin and on the tongue, on stones and in the salt fields, in the landscape and in the eyes of those who know how to recognise its ever-changing light and colour.
Jaka Ivančič’s photography exhibition presents the salt pans as a place of many faces. Images of tranquil water surfaces and the geometry of water channels, salt-loving vegetation, solitary salt workers’ houses and birds intertwine moments of silence, reflections of the sky and movements of light. These are not merely landscape motifs. They are evocative portrayals of the connection between nature and humankind, which – like salt itself – lives in rhythm with the sea.
