From 21 to 29 November 2026, the European Week for Waste Reduction will focus on material sufficiency – consuming more thoughtfully, using products for longer and preventing waste at the source. We invite tourism providers in the Portorož and Piran destination to bring these principles into their daily operations and help create a more responsible and sustainable destination through small, practical steps.
Buy thoughtfully, use things for longer
In modern society, we often buy more than we really need. This pattern of consumption puts additional pressure on natural resources and contributes to waste generation.
The European Week for Waste Reduction therefore encourages a simple question: do we really need to buy something new, or can we repair, reuse, borrow or exchange what we already have?
The key message is clear: buy thoughtfully, use things for longer and create less waste.
What can tourism providers do?
Hotels, restaurants, apartments and other tourism businesses can play an important role in reducing waste, as their everyday decisions can influence both employees and guests.
The European Week can be a good opportunity to identify where unnecessary consumption can be reduced. This may include using existing equipment for longer, repairing products instead of replacing them, reducing single-use packaging and making purchasing decisions more carefully.
Restaurants can also pay closer attention to the quantities of food they order, packaging and the reuse of materials, while accommodation providers can look for ways to reduce consumables and choose more durable solutions.
Involve your guests too
Sustainable actions can have an even greater impact when visitors are included. Tourism providers can encourage guests, in a positive and friendly way, to use resources responsibly and show that a quality tourism experience does not need to rely on excessive consumption.
During the European Week, providers can also display or share the European Week for Waste Reduction poster in their premises, on their websites or social media channels and help spread the message of more responsible resource use.
Small choices, long-term impact
Waste prevention begins before waste is created. Every product used for longer, every repair and every more thoughtful purchase means fewer raw materials are consumed and less waste is generated.
For a tourism destination such as Portorož and Piran, this is also another step towards more sustainable business practices, more responsible use of resources and a more environmentally conscious experience for guests.
