Maritime history in a seaside palace

The Maritime Museum Sergej Mašera Piran is housed in the impressive Gabrielli Palace from the mid-19th century, located right next to the port of Piran. The building itself is already an experience – with its monumental staircase, rich stucco decorations, and historic frescoes, reflecting the former splendor of bourgeois life. The museum was founded in 1954 and is today the leading institution for the research, preservation, and presentation of Slovenia’s maritime heritage.

Its story is closely connected to the development of navigation, trade, and everyday life by the sea, which over the centuries has shaped the identity of Slovenian Istria.

The world of ships, sailors, and trade routes

Museum collections take you on a journey from prehistory to the 20th century. You can explore the earliest maritime connections in the Adriatic, Roman ports, and the rich trade networks linking the coast with Aquileia, Venice, Trieste, and the wider Mediterranean.

A special focus is placed on shipbuilding, maritime routes, and the lives of seafarers and fishermen, whose traditions in this area span over a thousand years. Exhibited artefacts, ship models, and seafarers’ stories reveal the important role of Piran as a maritime and trading centre, as well as the strong connections between the sea and people from the Slovenian hinterland.

An experience that connects the sea and life

The museum stands out for its remarkable diversity – from maritime archaeology, where you can discover artifacts recovered from the seabed, to other collections that depict the lives of fishermen, sailors and salt workers. Among the highlights are also ship models, artistic objects, and stories of people who lived with and from the sea. Each space offers a different perspective, from everyday life to major historical moments.

This is not just a museum visit, but a true journey through time, where visitors can feel how deeply the sea has shaped the life and culture of this region.
