Portorož & Piran has once again gained recognition as a destination for major international events. Among the new Slovenia Congress Ambassadors 2026 is Mitja Margon, honoured for organising Opti Worlds 2025 in Portorož, one of the major international events organised by Sailing Club Pirat.
The Slovenian Congress Ambassador Programme once again recognised professionals whose expertise, international reputation and organisational work make an important contribution to the development of Slovenia’s meetings industry and to positioning the country on the international map of professional, business and sporting events.
Mitja Margon among the new Congress Ambassadors
Among the 15 new recipients of the honorary title Slovenia Congress Ambassador 2026 is Mitja Margon, recognised for organising Opti Worlds 2025 – the Optimist World Championship.
The event brought numerous young sailors, accompanying family members, coaches and other participants from around the world to Portorož, once again demonstrating the importance of major international sporting events for destination promotion.
For Portorož & Piran, such events are important far beyond the sporting programme itself. They strengthen international visibility, generate overnight stays, involve local tourism providers and create long-term promotional and business opportunities.
JK Pirat as an important partner in international events
The organisation of the Opti Worlds 2025 World Championship represents an important achievement for Sailing Club Pirat, which has a long-standing tradition of organising regattas and other sporting events at sea.
Projects like this confirm that Portorož & Piran is not only a tourism destination, but also a location capable of hosting high-quality international events where sport, tourism, professional expertise and international cooperation come together.
Events with a strong international reach also help maintain the destination’s visibility outside the main tourism season and attract specific visitor segments.
Congress Ambassadors connect knowledge and opportunities
The Slovenian Congress Ambassador Programme has been running since 2019 and now brings together more than one hundred ambassadors from a wide range of professional fields. Their role is particularly important in attracting and organising international events that bring new knowledge, visitors, business opportunities and long-term connections to Slovenia.
This year’s recipients were recognised at a gala event at Ljubljana Castle, organised by the Slovenian Convention Bureau in partnership with the Slovenian Tourist Board, Ljubljana Tourism and other partners.
For Portorož & Piran, Mitja Margon’s recognition is another confirmation of the importance of professionally organised international events and strong cooperation between sports organisations, tourism stakeholders and other local partners.
