Piran Marine Oasis has reached an important international milestone – the project has received official endorsement under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021–2030.
With this recognition, Piran Marine Oasis joins an international community of projects and programmes contributing to a better understanding of the marine environment, the development of science-based solutions and a more sustainable future for the oceans.
The Ocean Decade is a United Nations initiative coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO). Its vision is summed up in the motto “The science we need for the ocean we want.”
An important recognition for a project in the Bay of Piran
Official endorsement means that Piran Marine Oasis contributes to the mission of the Ocean Decade through its goals and activities.
The project brings together marine research, biodiversity conservation, the development of new approaches and the involvement of different stakeholders, while also creating a space for generating new knowledge about the marine environment.
Piran Marine Oasis has been endorsed as a Decade Project within the Early Career Ocean Professionals Programme (ECOPs).
From the Bay of Piran to the international community
By becoming part of the Ocean Decade, the project connects with a broader international network of research, professional and development initiatives.
Piran Marine Oasis is also presented on the official Ocean Decade website, giving the project greater international visibility and creating new opportunities for cooperation, knowledge exchange and partnerships.
This means that the knowledge and experience gained in Slovenian waters are becoming part of global efforts to better understand and protect the oceans.
Partner support also plays an important role
The development of Piran Marine Oasis is also supported by partners from the business sector. The project’s main supporter is BAUHAUS Slovenija, which enabled the development and installation of the first three underwater structures of the Marine Oasis, as well as part of the fourth structure.
The underwater structures form an important part of the area where new approaches are being developed and tested for more sustainable management of the marine environment, the creation of new habitats for marine organisms and the conservation of biodiversity.
The project therefore also serves as an example of cooperation between science, the non-governmental sector and business in the search for practical solutions for the future of the sea.
A local project with global significance
Piran Marine Oasis remains a space for research, development and learning about the Slovenian sea, while the official endorsement of the Ocean Decade also gives it an important international framework.
What is being developed in the Bay of Piran is now even more closely connected to global efforts to improve our understanding of the oceans and find solutions for their sustainable future.
