Sustainable solutions can be large or small; what matters is that they improve public spaces, encourage responsible behaviour and inspire others. This year, Portorož & Piran has been nominated for the Best Green Practice of Slovenian destinations 2026 with the We Love (Clean) Piran initiative.
Slovenia Green highlights inspiring sustainable practices
Each year, the Slovenia Green Consortium highlights some of the most inspiring sustainable practices implemented by its member destinations and tourism providers. The aim is not only to recognise successful solutions, but also to share practical ideas that can inspire other destinations, tourism businesses and individuals to take further steps towards more sustainable tourism.
Ten destination practices were selected among Slovenia Green members that successfully completed their sustainability assessment during the relevant period. The final winners will be determined by combining the evaluations of representatives of the Slovenia Green Consortium and the Slovenian Tourist Board with the votes of the public.
The winners will be announced at the final Slovenia Green members’ meeting on 18 November 2026 in Cerkno.
Portorož & Piran with the We Love (Clean) Piran initiative
Among this year’s nominees is the destination Portorož & Piran with the practice We Love (Clean) Piran.
The initiative addresses a very specific challenge in Piran’s historic town centre. Visitors had occasionally been using niches in Piran’s town walls as places to leave rubbish. Public utility company Okolje Piran therefore introduced a solution that is both practical and visually appealing.
Instead of closing the niches with fences or other barriers, flower pots were placed in them, accompanied by clear visual messages, pictograms and notices in Slovenian, Italian and English. In a simple and friendly way, the intervention encourages visitors to behave responsibly and helps keep Piran clean and pleasant.
The practice forms part of the broader Love Piran campaign, which uses simple visual messages to raise awareness among visitors about responsible behaviour and respect for the town and its public spaces.
A small measure with multiple benefits
This type of initiative demonstrates that sustainable destination management does not always require major infrastructure projects. Well-designed smaller interventions can also improve the quality of public spaces, reduce inappropriate behaviour and encourage visitors to actively contribute to preserving the destination.
For Portorož & Piran, the nomination also highlights the importance of cooperation between local stakeholders and of developing solutions that respond to the specific characteristics of our environment and to the visitor experience.
