This year, too, we are joining European Mobility Week, which from 16 to 22 September promotes sustainable ways of getting around and invites us to leave the car behind, at least for a while, and choose walking, cycling or public transport instead.
As part of the activities, Župančičeva Street will be closed to motor vehicles from Wednesday, 16 September, through Tuesday, 22 September 2026. During this time, the street will take on a somewhat different character – becoming a space intended primarily for people, socialising and safe movement without motor traffic.
The highlight of European Mobility Week will be on Tuesday, 22 September, when we celebrate Car-Free Day. Various activities and presentations will take place on Župančičeva Street, filling the street with interesting and diverse events for all generations. Among those presenting their activities will be the Red Cross, Coastal Pharmacies and the Library. Visitors will be able to obtain useful information, take part in activities and enjoy spending time in the town centre.
On Car-Free Day, 22 September 2026, city bus services will be free of charge. Passengers will be able to travel free of charge on the Lucija–Portorož–Piran and Lucija–Strunjan (KRKA) city routes, as well as on the Fornače–Piran bus route.
We invite residents and visitors alike to take advantage of free public transport, visit the activities on Župančičeva Street and join us in celebrating European Mobility Week. Perhaps this week is an opportunity to make one of our everyday journeys differently – on foot, by bicycle or by bus – and in doing so contribute to streets with less traffic, cleaner air and a more pleasant environment for everyone.
Every journey counts. Let us leave the car at home for one day and perhaps keep a new, more sustainable habit for the future.
