High summer temperatures and prolonged dry periods increase water consumption and place additional pressure on local water resources. During a heatwave, it is therefore particularly important to use water thoughtfully – whether we are residents, visitors, hoteliers, hospitality providers or other tourism professionals.
Due to the low water level of the Rižana River and high temperatures, the water heats up more quickly, worsening conditions for fish and other aquatic organisms. The competent authorities therefore warn against the unauthorised extraction of large quantities of water from the river. Swimmers are also asked not to use soap, shampoo or detergents in natural waters, as these substances can be especially harmful when water levels are low.
We can contribute to the responsible use of water by making a few simple changes to our everyday habits. Every drop saved counts, so we recommend:
- taking shorter showers and turning off the water while soaping;
- turning off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving;
- reusing towels and bed linen in hotels when replacement is not necessary;
- immediately informing staff about leaking taps or toilet cisterns;
- using washing machines and dishwashers only when they are full;
- watering gardens early in the morning or late in the evening;
- avoiding washing cars and cleaning outdoor surfaces with drinking water unless necessary.
Accommodation and hospitality providers also play an important role in reducing water consumption. Hoteliers can encourage guests to participate through clear information about reusing towels, regular inspections of taps, showers and irrigation systems, and the use of water-efficient equipment. Hospitality providers can reduce consumption through efficient dishwashing, washing food in containers instead of under running water, and regularly maintaining their equipment.
It is important that water conservation is not seen as giving up comfort, but as responsible and thoughtful behaviour. By taking small steps together, we can help ensure a more reliable drinking-water supply, protect natural resources and support the more sustainable development of the destination.
