The Salt Keeper’s Secret in the Sečovlje Salt Pans is a new interactive experience at the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, offering visitors a playful, educational and sustainable way to explore its rich salt-making heritage, natural environment and the stories of former salt workers.
The Salt Keeper’s Secret app was developed in collaboration with the developers of the NEXTO Guides platform as part of the Slovenian Tourist Board’s VD 2025 call for proposals. The project offers a modern way to interpret the natural and cultural heritage of the Sečovlje Salt Pans, allowing visitors to discover the area in an interactive, educational and environmentally friendly way. The digital experience reduces the need for printed materials while encouraging visitors to explore the protected area responsibly, respect nature and gain a deeper understanding of its salt-making heritage. The app therefore directly supports the objectives of the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism and the destination’s commitment to developing sustainable, high-quality and innovative tourism products.
The Tourist Board Portorož invited the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, Soline d. o. o., and the Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum Piran, namely the Museum of Salt Making, to collaborate on the development of the app.
The experience is accessed through the NEXTO app and takes visitors on a journey of discovery through the Fontanigge area. Guided by the voice of Pino the salt keeper, participants complete activities and quizzes, collect salt crystals, discover traditional salt workers’ houses, observe birds, learn about the Dragonja River and explore the unique landscape of the Sečovlje Salt Pans.
The Salt Keeper’s Secret is designed for families, children, school groups and all curious visitors who wish to experience the salt pans a little differently—through play, storytelling and active exploration. The experience brings together nature, culture and digital storytelling, encouraging visitors to respect the salt-making heritage, the sensitive natural environment and the rules of conduct within the protected area.
By using the app, visitors can explore the salt pans more sustainably, without the need for additional printed maps or materials. In this way, we promote the digital interpretation of the area, reduce the use of paper materials and guide visitors towards the responsible discovery of Fontanigge, a less-visited yet exceptionally valuable part of the park.
We invite individual visitors, tourist guides, travel agencies and tour organisers to use the app. By including the experience in their programmes, they can introduce their guests to the salt pans in a modern, interactive and sustainable way.
The NEXTO app is free of charge. Admission to the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park is charged according to the current price list.
