The closing event of the “Salt-Making Encounters 2026” project will take place with the participation of the “Salt-Making Family” group. The project will be presented as part of the European Heritage Days 2026.
Through meetings and personal stories, the project created opportunities to discover and preserve the heritage connected with traditional salt-making. At the closing event in the former salt warehouse, a discussion will focus on research into salt-making from the perspectives of management and heritage preservation. Researchers involved in the project “A Grain of Salt, Crystallising Coexistence: Salt-Making as Experiential Environmental Wisdom” will present some of their findings.
Dr Jerneja Penca (ZRS Koper, MIOS) and Matjaž Kljun, MA (ZRS Koper, MIOS and ZVKDS), will present the legal aspects of managing the salt-pan area and possibilities for more cooperative management in the future. Dr Primož Pipan (ZRC SAZU, GIAM) will discuss the heritage-making processes connected with salt production in the Piran salt pans within the Municipality of Piran. The discussion will be moderated by Dr Maja Bjelica (ZRS Koper, IFRŠ).
