Opening of the documentary photography exhibition From the Theatre to the Hotel

The Mediteranum Piran Institute will open the documentary photography exhibition entitled From the Theatre to the Hotel on 18 September at 5 pm, at the beginning of the main pier near Tartini Theatre, together with the author Slobodan Simič – Sime.

Author Slobodan Simič Sime will present 10 historical photographs, ranging from the period before the land reclamation, Tartini Theatre and the hotel existed, to the various construction and demolition works that took place in this area and remain little known to the public. Each photograph is accompanied by important information.

The exhibition presents the history of the reclaimed area in front of today’s Aquarium, encompassing the site of Tartini Theatre and Hotel Piran, and chronologically highlights every construction and demolition project carried out there. It is one of the least known and most controversial examples of the city’s urban expansion, marked by the construction of buildings that were not stylistically harmonised with their surroundings.

The urban planning concept sparked debate from the very beginning and was also profoundly influenced by history and changing political regimes. Even today, many local residents and experts continue to ask whether placing such a dominant building mass in this location — blocking views and permanently altering the city skyline — was ever a good idea. Through this exhibition and its expert information, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the city.

The outdoor exhibition will be accessible 24 hours a day for one month.
