To celebrate International Underwater Cultural Heritage Day, the Maritime Museum Piran invites you to a special event dedicated to the research, protection and presentation of the underwater cultural heritage of the Slovenian sea.
The programme will begin with an opening address by the Acting Director of the Maritime Museum Piran, Uroš Hribar, followed by a presentation of the permanent maritime archaeology exhibition. Experts will then present various aspects of researching and preserving underwater heritage – from the conservation of marine finds and waterlogged wood from the Fizine archaeological site to new insights into the Roman settlement and harbour at Fizine.
A special part of the programme will also focus on the development of galleys and sunken galleys in the Bay of Koper based on archival sources, as well as on stories of 20th-century shipwrecks. The event will also mark the opening of the enhanced permanent maritime archaeology exhibition Between the Sea and the Land, where visitors can discover the development of archaeological research, conservation and restoration of objects found beneath the sea surface.
The event is being held on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of UNESCO’s Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage and brings together experts from the Maritime Museum Piran, the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, the University of Ljubljana and the Institute for Underwater Archaeology.
