Ex-tempore Piran is the most open event organised by the Piran Coastal Galleries, welcoming both the general public and visual artists of different generations. It is renowned for its competitive character and long-standing tradition, which attest to its great popularity both locally and internationally.
Ex-tempore Piran 2026 will begin on Friday, 28 August 2026, with the opening of a solo exhibition by Julija Brajnik Volčič at the Herman Pečarič Gallery in Piran. A student at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, she received the Young Artist Award at Ex-tempore Piran 2025 and will present a new series of paintings entitled A Bite Is Also a Touch.
On Saturday, 29 August, the stamping of painting supports will begin at various locations across Slovenia (Portorož, Ljubljana, Celje and Maribor) and in Croatia (Rijeka). During the week leading up to 5 September 2026, a variety of accompanying events for children and adults will take place in Piran, organised by the Piran Coastal Galleries in cooperation with various partners.
Following the event, the exhibition will be open to visitors according to the following schedule:
- Piran City Gallery, 5 September – 18 October 2026
- Monfort Gallery, Portorož, 5 September – 15 November 2026
This year’s international expert jury consists of: Mojca Grmek, curator and head of the House of Culture in Pivka (Slovenia), Rachele D’Osualdo, curator and cultural manager (Italy), and Igor Eškinja, visual artist and associate professor at APURI Rijeka (Croatia). The jury will select the paintings for the exhibition and award numerous prizes, including the prestigious Young Artist Award and Grand Prix. The Ex-tempore Piran 2026 exhibition will be presented at two venues: the Piran City Gallery will showcase the selected works as well as all award-winning works, while the Monfort Gallery in Portorož will display paintings that the international jury has also included in the final selection.
Ex-tempore Piran 2026 will conclude on Saturday, 5 September 2026, with an awards ceremony and musical programme at 8:30 p.m. in Tartini Square (directed by Igor Jelen – Iggy). Renowned vocalist Nuška Drašček will perform, and the event will be hosted by Katja Pišot Maljevac.
