A magical stroll from the town centre to St. Catherine’s bay
The tour begins at the meeting point at TIC Ankaran, where you are welcomed by your friendly guide, Alja, who will introduce the programme and the highlights of the experience. After a short introduction, the route leads from the town centre through picturesque streets to the Park of Remembrance, a place where nature and memories of the past intertwine.
From there, you descend towards the coast, where a wooden educational boardwalk awaits – a special observation path crossing the Mediterranean Salt Meadow, a natural site of national importance included in the Natura 2000 network due to its unique flora and fauna.
At the foot of the meadow, the walk continues to St. Catherine’s Bay, opening up views of the remarkable coastal landscape. Along the way, there is a short stop at the outdoor fitness area, offering time to enjoy the scenery and take a brief rest. The path then leads to the Shell Cemetery, a natural phenomenon where numerous species of shells and snails form a unique coastal deposit. Here, your guide explains the formation of the shell bank, the area’s biodiversity, and the importance of protecting this exceptional habitat.
Nature, heritage and relaxation by the sea
The Shell Cemetery is not only a geological curiosity but also a cultural and natural experience. More than 234 species of molluscs, as well as numerous birds, can be found along the shore, creating a rich coastal ecosystem best enjoyed through observation and the soothing sound of the sea.
After exploring the site, the group walks back together towards the centre of Ankaran, concluding the guided tour with a sense of having truly experienced the natural and cultural heritage of Ankaran – from green meadows and coastal paths to the sea and its many secrets.
