The Piran Aquarium
Museum
The Piran Aquarium is located in the heart of Piran, in Villa Piranesi by the Fishermen’s Square.
Here you can dive into the underwater world of the northern Adriatic Sea and discover all the secrets of its marine inhabitants. The aquarium is home to around 140 different species of marine organisms, with fish being the most numerous. Among them are sea bass, gilthead seabream, mullets, black seabream, salemas, congers, moray eels, groupers, gobies, clingfish, flatfish, stargazers, dragonets, seahorses, sharks, lobsters, and a variety of mollusks, sponges, cnidarians, and echinoderms such as starfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and brittle stars.
The aquarium was renovated in 2009 and now features 25 tanks illuminated with artificial light of varying intensity and color temperature, allowing marine organisms to be displayed in the most natural way possible. Visitors can also view archaeological remains of the 11th-century Church of St. Nicholas, visible through the aquarium’s glass floors.
