Portorož and Piran come alive with festive magic in December, inviting visitors of all ages to enjoy a rich programme of events: the largest covered ice rink by the sea, the renowned Sparkling Wine Festival, three romantic Christmas markets, and many other experiences that will make your winter getaway truly unforgettable.
The festivities begin on 29 November with the lighting of the holiday decorations and a concert by the popular group Čuki on Portorož’s main square (Trg prekomorskih brigad). From that day until 4 January, the traditional Christmas market will offer a delightful selection of local products, festive treats, and artisanal gift ideas. With its lights, scents, and flavours, the market creates a true fairytale atmosphere. Every day will feature performances, music, and activities for all generations: nine events dedicated to children – including visits from St. Nicholas and Santa Claus – and fourteen evenings of live music, from choirs to local bands, Dalmatian harmonies, and disco nights.
Beyond the centre of Portorož, the festive spirit will also spread to Lucija and the beautiful Tartini Square in Piran, each hosting additional events and surprises.
Entertainment for the whole family
In December, Portorož transforms into an enchanting world by the sea. One of the highlights is the largest covered ice rink by the sea, set up just steps from the shoreline in the former salt warehouse Magazin Grando. The grand opening is scheduled for 29 November, and skating will be free on opening day. A varied programme of performances and creative workshops for children will add to the fun.
December is the month of bubbles
Not to be missed is the 12th Sparkling Wine Festival, taking place on 26 December in the magnificent Crystal Hall of the Kempinski Palace Portorož. More than 200 labels of sparkling wines and champagnes from Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Spain, and France will be presented during this elegant and festive evening. Ticket pre-sales open on 1 December, and early booking is recommended.
New Year’s Eve by the sea
The big New Year’s Eve celebration will take place on the stunning Tartini Square in Piran, featuring a performance by the hugely popular Croatian singer Petar Grašo. On 1 January, Portorož will welcome the new year with its traditional New Year’s Jump into the Sea, followed by a concert by the group Kingston and spectacular fireworks show that will illuminate the entire bay.
