In Piran,
the young Tartini attended the school in the oratory of Saint Philip Neri and
stood out among his peers at a young age because of his cleverness. This is
where he probably had his first music lessons, got to know the violin and
started learning fencing skills. In 1704, his father registered him to study in
Koper at the Collegio dei Padri delle Scuole Pie, later renamed the Collegio
dei Nobili, which was known as a kind of Istrian Athens in the area of
education and culture. This is where Giuseppe acquired a humanistic education
with knowledge of mathematics, philosophy and rhetoric. His father hoped that
his son would continue his church career and he had already arranged for him to
live with the Minorites in Piran, but his father’s expectations were not met.
