In this comedy, an adaptation of Beaumarchais’ satire, Linhart with the character of Matiček, who tries to outwit the baron because he is seducing his bride Nežka, skillfully weaves into the comedy the idea of freedom, brotherhood, and equality of all people, after less than two and a half centuries we can once again ask ourselves who the quick-witted, resourceful, and impulsive Matiček is today. This question is answered by the Ljubljana City Theater’s production, directed by Diego de Bree, which no longer seeks revolutionary charge in this situational comedy, but emphasizes the gap between uncontrolled drive and controlled reason. In this production, Linhart’s comedy is no longer a “boisterous, booming peasant ball, but rather a grotesque adventure about confusion, serving up unpredictable reactions, slow deliberations, and above all, a coherently extinguished will to live.”
