Lovro Kuhar – Prežihov Voranc: Battle on the Esophagus
Theatrical sketch
Director: Jernej Lorenci
Cast: Darja Reichman, Živa Selan, Blaž Setnikar /Gregor Luštek k. g., Branko Jordan k. g.
The staging of Voranc’s Boj na požiralniku, in which we follow the story of the Dihur family fighting for survival on difficult, muddy land, is clearly marked by Jernej Lorenci’s poetics and combines storytelling with a performative display of physical effort. With minor cuts, we hear virtually the entire text of the novella, while the demanding actions, which are exhausting for the actors and dancers, bring out the nuances and subtext of the novella; it speaks to us of the immeasurable cruelty of a historical moment, cruelty that is the result of hardship and powerlessness and is passed down from generation to generation like an evil fate, making Dihur’s story our own, with social hardships becoming more and more prevalent every day, albeit in a slightly more “sophisticated” and covert form. Violence due to the hardships of survival and powerlessness, in the struggle with the land and bureaucracy, regardless of whether you live in a village or a city, always finds its way to cruelty.
