Days of Artichokes in Strunjan

The fields of Strunjan are home to the autochthonous, culinary delicious and very healthy, but little-known Istrian artichokes. This cherished vegetable has an even longer tradition in Slovenian Istria than kaki, as it has been known in Strunjan since before the Republic of Venice. It grows in sunny locations, which we have planty here. Artichokes like warmth and the month of May is it’s season. It is purple-green in color, slightly smaller than the usual artichoke, but much tastier, which is why it is so highly valued in the world of culinary.

As a medicinal plant, the artichoke began to be used in the 20th century, however the list of dishes that can be prepared from this Mediterranean plant is quite long: salads, pickled artichokes, artichokes with meat sauces, pastas, pizzas, etc.
