The rich ecclesiastical and cultural heritage of Portorož & Piran
The first records of Piran date back to the 7th or 8th century, mentioned by a geographer from Ravenna. The city’s origins were influenced by Greek sailors, and its name has Greek roots. Piran developed on the Madona Cape, dominated by St. George’s Church, while archaeological findings reveal a continuous religious and settlement presence dating back to prehistoric times.
During the Middle Ages, Piran’s Christian identity was solidified through its rich ecclesiastical heritage, with over 23 churches, a monastery, and numerous chapels, which over centuries became an integral part of the cultural and architectural legacy.
