Sečovlje is nestled amidst salt pans, where they have direct contact with the sea. The conditions for the formation of salt pans were created by the River Dragonja with its sediments, while the valley itself offers ideal conditions for agriculture. Thus, residents of this part of Istria have been engaged in salt production, winemaking, olive growing, and agriculture for centuries.
In the past, the salt pans provided sustenance for many locals. Today, we take pride in them as they offer a unique experience to every visitor with their rich natural and cultural heritage. Walking among the salt fields, one is captivated by the scent of salt in the air.
All of this we aim to showcase at our July event, as it traditionally marks the beginning of the salt harvest. This has long been a festival in Sečovlje, celebrating our local traditions and heritage.
