Exploring Slovenian marine ecosystems

On a guided exploratory walk with an experienced naturalist, you will discover the diversity of Slovenian marine ecosystems, home to numerous animal and plant species. The walks focus on key habitats such as Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows, which provide a habitat for many marine organisms. This endangered ecosystem plays a vital role in the health of the Mediterranean Sea, offering shelter, food, and breeding grounds for numerous species.

During your exploration, you will visit flysch cliffs, characteristic of the Slovenian coast, which reveal the geological history of the area and provide unique habitats for plants and animals. Rocky bottoms, sandy and muddy sediments, and biogenic reefs formed by natural organisms such as corals and mussels form the foundation of marine life. On this journey, you will observe various marine organisms such as invertebrates, fish, shellfish, as well as less visible but ecologically crucial species that are often hard to notice.

The walks lead you through diverse habitat types – from rocky and muddy sea bottoms to underwater meadows and rocky shallows, where you’ll encounter many endangered flora and fauna species. If you're lucky, you might even spot seahorses, sea turtles, or even dolphins. With every step, you'll discover how vital these areas are as refuges, feeding grounds, and breeding areas for many marine species. With expert guidance, you will understand the importance of these ecosystems and how they are a key part of Slovenia’s marine biodiversity.

Responsible exploration and protection of the sea

These inspiring walks offer not only a glimpse into the diversity of marine life, but also an important message about the impact of human activities on the marine environment. With experienced experts, you will explore sensitive marine habitats and learn how vital it is for each individual to contribute to their preservation. Your presence on this experience is not just about observing nature, but an act of support for the protection of these unique ecosystems.

During the walk, you will encounter various types of pollutants that negatively affect the sea and marine life, such as cigarette butts, wet wipes, bottle caps, plastic bags, and other waste. These materials endanger marine organisms and can also negatively influence human quality of life. Along the way, you'll learn the importance of responsible interaction with nature and discover how you can personally help preserve healthy marine ecosystems.

The insights you gain will empower you to actively participate in the protection of these fragile habitats. This is the most valuable gift you’ll take with you – a new perspective on nature and how you can contribute to its conservation, so that future generations may also experience the beauty of the marine world.

How can you help preserve the sea through responsible behavior?

  • Do not touch or feed live marine organisms – respect their natural habitat.
  • Do not harm or disturb living creatures.
  • Do not take souvenirs from nature – leave shells, stones, driftwood, and other natural finds where they belong.
  • Always take your waste with you – nature is not a trash bin. If you see litter during your walk, pick it upsmall actions make a big difference.
  • Follow safety and conservation guidelines provided by your guides to protect yourself, others, and the marine ecosystem.
  • Avoid walking through sensitive habitats and minimize plastic use – bring water in a reusable bottle to ensure your visit leaves no trace.

By exploring the coast and enjoying its beauty, you’re not only taking care of your health and well-being, but also actively contributing to the preservation of nature and the richness of the sea.

For those who seek a bit more knowledge: the importance of marine shorelines

The marine shoreline represents the most diverse part of the Slovenian sea, rich in various marine habitats, including Posidonia seagrass meadows, biogenic reefs, rocky and muddy sea bottoms, and a marine lagoon. Most walks take place outside protected areas, as these coastal environments are also biodiverse and full of natural wonders. This way, we can explore key natural features without burdening the most sensitive protected areas, although walks can also be arranged within protected zones upon agreement.

The Slovenian coast includes only a small portion of protected areas, covering just a few percent of Slovenian territorial waters. Among them are Debeli Rtič Landscape Park, Strunjan Landscape Park, Rt Madona Natural Monument, and the Sečovlje Salina Landscape Park.

In Debeli Rtič Landscape Park, you’ll explore the shallow coastal zone up to 100 meters from shore, home to endangered marine flora and fauna such as the noble pen shell, seahorses, and sea turtles. The area also includes a Mediterranean salt meadow, a true gem of natural heritage. Strunjan is particularly known for its geological features and the 80-meter-high flysch cliff, which towers above the shore and merges into a natural marine coastline.

The Rt Madona Natural Monument, where the sea reaches depths of up to 38 meters, is the most biodiverse part of the Gulf of Trieste, also known locally as "Underwater Triglav."

By visiting these areas, you will encounter extraordinary biodiversity, which can be preserved by following conservation regulations. The Sečovlje Salina Landscape Park is one of Slovenia’s most important protected nature areas. It is part of the Natura 2000 network and a Ramsar site, home to over 280 bird species, including endangered ones such as terns and various herons. The salinas are also a key wintering and migratory stopover for many waterbirds.

This area is not only natural, but also culturally rich. The salt pans represent a traditional, environmentally friendly industry, where salt is still harvested by hand, making them extremely important from a nature conservation perspective.

In these places, responsible behavior helps preserve natural wealth. It is important to respect protected habitats and contribute to maintaining biodiversity for future generations.
