Portorož, a beautiful Slovenian seaside town, has a name that may be associated with the "port of roses", but the historical origin of the name is actually linked to the church of Sancta Maria Roxe / Santa Maria delle Rose (Saint Mary of the Rosary), which once graced the Bernardin.
Already in 1251, this church was an important symbol, as the name Portus sanctae Mariae de Rosa was mentioned for the first time in historical records. However, with the tourist boom in the 19th century, the name was transformed into the more modern and still established version - Portorož. However, the city has quite a few symbolic links with roses, which have gradually become an iconic symbol of the city.
The Portorož Rose
The Portorož rose (KO 00-0939-10) is a well-known species of floribunda, distinguished by its upright growth and its flowers in clusters. Growing to between 60 and 80 cm, it has vigorous growth and dark green foliage. Its vibrant orange flowers gradually turn yellow and then pale pink during flowering.
Thomas Proll, a breeder from the German company Kordes, selected this particular species from around 400,000 trials, and it was officially registered in 2012. This gave the Portorož Rose protection in the Plant Register.
Connection with nature and culture
Today, Portorož is not just a tourist destination but a place where historical, cultural, and natural beauties intertwine. Roses, which have become the symbol of this seaside town, play a crucial role not only in local horticulture but also in its culture and art.
Over the years, many artists and poets have found inspiration in the beauty of Portorož's roses, highlighting their significance both in Slovenia and internationally. Festivals such as the Portorož Rose Month further strengthen this connection, blending the aesthetics of roses with the region's rich culinary and wine culture.
