Stjuža is the only sea lagoon in Slovenia that is considered salt wetland. The name is derived from the Italian expression »chiusa « – closed. These days the bay is separated from the sea by a bund, leaving a canal as the only connection between the sea and the lagoon. The area has become home to many varied species of water birds due to the abundance of food, good shelter and shallow water.
