Where to go in July? To the Slovenian Istria!

The nice weather we’ve had provided us with summer days even before their official start. In July, sea-related aromas, cicada songs and sunshine will be joined by evenings, filled with music, culture, tradition and other diverse events.

Traditional Festivals and Events

In Istria, this July will once again be filled by mostly free traditional festivals and events, such as the 16th Alpe Adria PUF Festival, MIFF – Mediterranean International Folklore Festival, the international folk festival Folkest, IzolaFolk, Etno HistEria festival, the concert We Sing for Everyone (Pojemo za vse ljudi – concert of the Male Voice Choir Izola), and the Summertime in Ankaran event, which will feature two stages. At the Valdoltra beach, you will be able to see some of the renowned musical and theatre artists in action – Saša Pavček, Matjaž Javšnik, Andrej Rozman Roza. The main musical events in July will be the international Jazz evening as well as the performances of the band Avtomobili, singer Severa, and the performance of young philharmonic artists, who are still learning their craft, as well as the performance of the cellists from the Slovenian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. At the Študent beach, you will be able to choose between the blues and metal evening, and the performance of the legendary band Demolition Group.

 

Koper will host numerous events, such as the Summertime Concerts in the Tavern, Musical Highlights (Glasbeni utrinki), Summer Evenings under the Tree (Poletni večeri pod drevesom) and Summertime with Pearls (Poletje z biseri). The beginning of July will also see the continuation of the diverse events of the Primorska Summer Festival, while open-air theatre lovers will be able to attend the Summer Theatre Evenings, which will once again take place every Tuesday at Martič Square in Koper. The Ljubljanska Ulica street in Izola will once again host the Thursday’s musical evenings “Pri Špini”.

 

The 40th Piran Musical Eveningswill start on 5th July, in the cloister of the Piran Minorite Monastery. This elite chamber music festival, carrying on the tradition of the famous violinist Giuseppe Tartini and the Accademie dei Virtuosi, will be heard throughout Piran until the end of the month. The International painters’ event Ex-tempore Sečovlje will come to a close on 7th July, when the award will be awarded. On 14thJuly, there will be an event called Lowering of the Princess from the Bell Tower at Tartini Square, while on 20th and 21st of July, the visitors to Portorož and Piran will be able to attend the Sete Sóis Sete Luas Festival.

 

Children’s Programme

There will also be enough activities for the children. The beginning of July in Piran is reserved for the 7th Festival of Kids’ Creativity and Lively Activities Zrno Soli. From 5th until 28th July, 1st May Square will be bustling with puppet and theatre shows, film screenings and concerts for kids. In Koper, children will be able to attend the theatre-related event Kids’ Summer Theatre Rollercoaster among other things.

 

Istrian Events and Activities in the Countryside

The countryside will also be bustling with activity, as visitors will be able to attend traditional “Šagra” festival as well as various other musical and culinary events. Bertoki will once again host a series of events as part of the Summer in Bertoki festival, on 6th and 7th July, Marezige will once again host the Festival of Big Bands Marezijazz, and on 7th July, Šmarje will host the event Bela Ištrijana (White Istrian). On 14th and 15th July, Nova vas will host the 7th Wine and Garlic Festival, where visitors will be able to taste exquisite wine, Istrian red garlic as well as other culinary goodies.

 From 12thuntil 15th July, your stay in Koper will be enhanced by the Calamari and Mediterranean Party, and by the Yellow Night event from 26thuntil 29th July.

 

Musical Experience for Every Taste

From 4thuntil 7th July, jazz lovers should visit the Caffe Teater Jazz Festival Piran. On Saturday, 7th July, Manzioli Square will host the concert by the performer Boris Cavazza, featuring his charming voice, who will be joined on stage by other famous musicians.

And on Friday, 13thJuly, the same location will host the celebrations for the Municipality of Izola’s local holiday. Visitors will be able to attend to the concert of the 3 Big Band Orchestra and their guests. On 14th July, music lovers will be able to attend the 38th Melodies of the Sea and Sun festival. Also, Location under Belvedere (Plac pod Belvederjem) will not miss out on all the festivities, as on the same day, it will host the concert Pizza Connection – a band that plays Italian rock and pop music. On 17th July, Piran will host yet another jazz festival – Festival pJAZZa.

From 20thuntil 22nd July, the Alaya Club Portorož will host the Rockin' Riviera Weekender#3, and on the same weekend, Location under Belvedere will host the indie music festival Izola Mjuzik Fest. On 21st July, the Portorož beach will host the performance of Dino Merlin. From 22nd July until 5th August, visitors to the Tartini Square will be able to enjoy various performances as part of the Piran Summer Festival. The three-concert event Isola Music Festival will take place at its traditional time, on Tuesday, 24thJuly, Thursday, 26th July, and Friday, 27th July, at Manzioli Square. This year’s performers are: FolklubIlaria Graziano & Francesco Forni, and Tinkara Kovač with her band. On Saturday, 28th July, the central Portorož beach will host a concert by Severina.

 

Fit and Active

One of the biggest events in July will be the International Handball Tournament Eurofest, which will take place on Koper, from 3rd until 8thJuly. In addition to that, in July, the Aquapark of Water Sports Active Koper in Žusterna will be open every day of the week, so that all fun-loving individuals and groups will be able to go standup paddleboarding, sailing, diving, and riding with paddle boats, attend fun water-related activities for kids, and do other sea-related activities. Every Monday evening, everyone will be able to attend the NIA guided workout at the Študent beach in Ankaran, while every Tuesday, everyone will be able to attend a yoga session at the Archaeological Park Izola. You can also rent a SUP-board at the Tourist and Information Centre in Izola, and go on a discovery ride around Izola’s beaches. Maybe you will ride all the way to Žusterna?
