The Route of Health and Friendship Parenzana runs along the alignment of the former narrow –gauge railway, which used to connect the towns of Trieste and Poreč, as well as the settlements by the railway line. It was the main land communication link between Istra and Central Europe for 34 years. It is called the route of friendship, since it has arisen from a common decision of the Slovenian, Italian and Croatian municipalities through which the popular Parenzana was once running; and it is named the route of health because more than a hundred years after the first train puffed along the railway line, the same route can now be used by recreationists, hikers, cyclists, runners, sportspersons and all residents and visitors who appreciate healthy living and take pleasure in discovering their home place or the place of their vacation.
The route leads through old towns and villages, comes close to the sea and then continues through vineyards and olive groves, passes through short tunnels, crosses the valleys over the hills.
The route, of which parts are included in the European »Greenways«, is varied and well suited for everybody, not too demanding, but interesting and instructive.
There are several rest areas along the way where you can catch your breath and get valuable information. One of them is the Parenzana Museum.
