Day of St. George 2018

Saint George's day, celebrated in the name of the patron saint of the town of Piran, will be held on 22nd April. His name day is on the 23rd April and symbolizes the return of spring, Resurrection and progress. Trough many centuries in history, this was the day when the people of Piran, who worked at the saltpans, were making preparations for the start of a new season. A lot of them even moved to live in small houses, located at the saltpans, which will once again be symbolically shown by the Saltpans family - La fameadeisalineri. They will depart with the Pyros boat at 1:30 pm.

The event will start at 9 am with a performance of the wind orchestra Pihalni orkester Piran at Tartini Square, which will be followed by St. George’s anthem in front of St. Peter’s Church. The procession, along with the statue of St. George, will continue on the Ulica IX. korpusa street all the way to the town’s cathedral, where a Holy Mass will be held in both, the Slovene and the Italian languages. During the festival, visitors will be able to visit certain exhibitions.

On Friday, 20th April, from 8 am, the members of the Anbot and Faros Societies, with the help of the students from the secondary schools High School, Electro and Maritime School, and Grammar School A. Sema, as well as students from the Faculty of Tourism Studies – Turistica at the University of Primorska, will decorate the Tartini Square with garlands and therefore transform the town into a place of celebration.

Saturday, 21st April 2018, Piran

At 10 am and 4 pm, in front of Tartini’s House

“Water yesterday and today”

During the walk around the town, we will discover wells and reservoirs. Interactive event. Memories and tales about, how it was yesterday and how it is today, to fuel the brainstorming regarding the state of the architectural heritage and urban elements, with the emphasis on water and its use. The tour will be guided by Daniela Paliaga Jankovič. At 10 am in Slovene and at 4 pm in the Italian language.

At 12 pm, Our Lady of Health Church at Punta

Art exhibition opening “God of Mercy” by the painter Michel Pouchet (France)

The exhibition will be open to the public every day from 21st May between 10 am and 6 pm at Our Lady of Health Church, St. Mary the Comforter Church and the St. John the Baptist Baptistery.

Sunday, 22nd April 2018, Tartini Square

9 am – Performance by the wind orchestra Pihalni orkester Piran

9:30 am – St. George’s anthem in front of the St. Peter’s Church: the Parish Mixed Choir Georgios and the Mixed Choir Giuseppe Tartini, procession along the ulica IX. korpusa street to the St. George’s Church, grand Holy Mass in Slovene and Italian languages, social event at the parish garden (Pastoral and Cultural Centre Georgios)

12:30 pm – A symbolic departure of the Saltpans family from the Tartini Square to the saltpans by the Pyros boat, together with the performance of the wind orchestra Pihalni orkester Piran

1 pm – Opening of the exhibition “In the name of the god in the service of the people, the beatified Francesco Bonifacio“, Tartini’s House
