Portorož is Slovenia’s most elite and prominent name in the field of tourism and also in the field of tourist history together with Piran. Its present fame and glory is largely due to visits of ladies who already in the beginning of the 19th century chose Vienna, Venice, Opatija and also Portorož to flaunt the latest European fashion. All words to name and describe the most important and most observed part of the women’s apparel, namely the handbag are superfluous. We know that handbags had been important for their functionality but soon they were also bestowed with the aesthetic dimension and became true pieces of art. The fact that their value soared, that each handbag had its own purpose, that it belonged to a specific social class, that handbags represented a challenge to all renowned designers in the world etc. is most telling of the role of the female handbag.
More than 1000 exceptional exhibits call for your attention. They have been taken from all time periods ranging from 18th century until the present day, and come in all shapes and manufacturing techniques. Some of them used to belong to former Portorož ladies. However, the museum does not hold only handbags! You will be amazed by hundreds of tiny and less tiny but for women irreplaceable objects that they carried in their handbags. Some of them are … No, they just cannot be described, you will have to come and see them for yourself! Only here will you be able to see the development of Slovenian ladies’ handbag-making, a craft that used to be at the very top with regards to knowledge and product quality. The collection of handbags that were donated to us from important women are a story unto itself. We also highly recommend a visit to the collection of modern handbags in which you will get acquainted with fashion trends in this area.
Lounging in comfortable armchairs you can watch films, projections, leaf through magazines or books on handbags, sip on a cup of coffee, tea or something else and enjoy the museum’s sales gallery that you can’t see anywhere nearby.
There is an abundance of information on handbags and other accessories related to them. Thus, the Museum is at the same time a key information and learning centre for anyone interested in this field.
And not only that. Museum offers a lot of other contents: occasional fashion shows, workshops for independent handbag-making, guided tours, rental of prestigious handbags, round tables, presentations and discussions with Slovenian designers and/or handbag manufacturers and much more.
